If one operates by whim, with no regard for reason, then one’s
interests inevitably will collide with another’s. Now we have enemies. Values
must be chosen with long-term consequences in mind – operating on the whim of
the moment does not allow one to do this.
Love is a rational process – love is given on the basis of
value choice. When we love someone but do
not love everything about our beloved, we are experiencing a conflict with our own
value judgment.
The opposite of reason is not intuition.
Reason
versus force. Threat of force compels people to go against their judgment. Fear
is an emotion which responds to force.
Emotion is a reaction. Reason is an action. Intuition is a
sense.
